España Tapas

I love how this tapa situation is done throughout Spain. Eating a lil plate full of delicious bites and sipping on an amazing 3euro glass of wine isn’t a bag gig. Its the perfect combo if you ask me. We ate some unbelievable food over the past couple of weeks we were traveling around. Our best meal hands down was Cañete in Barcelona. We started with fried eggplant with drizzled honey, croquettes, tuna tartare, and a beautiful salad. Our main courses we shared oxtail mashed potatoes and cannelloni of roast poularde and foie béchamel. And I can’t forget our nice bottle of wine for a whopping 18euros. Naturally, we found a craft beer spot called Black Lab and their IPA was killer! I was feelin the Portland/San Francisco beer vibes for sure. Spain has some seriously amazing wines too which I never realized until experiencing on this trip. Their whites and rosés are equally as good as their reds. My sister introduced me to my new fave summer drink, a tinto de verano, which is a chilled red wine based drink with sprite and a lemon. So refreshing!

A good friend of ours lived in Barcelona for a couple of years so he gave us some recommendations for a couple other places we went to which were La Xampanyeria and . La Xampanyeria had bubbles galore. One euro a glass and five euros for a full bottle of champagne! If it wouldn’t have been so crowded we would have stayed and drank and ate there forever but it was a madhouse uncongested with tourists which was nice. Locals only here for the most part. Glad we only had a small bite here since we stumbled upon a street food fair around the corner, Barcelona Born Gourmet. This was also something to definitely check out the next time you’re in Barca. Everything was locally grown and made fresh right in front of you. This fair even had a dj. Mercat de la Boqueria is also something to check out. A huge food market with anything your could possibly think of, chocolates, meats, seafood, veggies, aged cheese you name it. We also went to Mercado San Miguel in Madrid which had delicious food as well.

Seville argumentatively also had a couple of our fave restaurants too. These were more of a farm to table, California-style small plates than Spanish-style. Gorgeous presentations that tasted just as delicious! La Brunilda and Mamarrachas you’re ohsogooood.

The midi & jumper

The past couple of summers I’ve been really into cotton midi dresses. They’re comfy, easy and go with anything. I’ve found most of mine at Forever 21 for under $15! But my fave is the black one I purchased from Madewell.  These were my absolute go-to when I was in Spain. They’re lightweight with little fabric so they fit perfectly in your luggage. I brought about 5 with me this trip. Mostly solid neutral colors and one striped. I’m not much for patterns for the most part, unless it’s in regards to accessorizing. Accessorizing is where the fun part starts. I added jewelry, funky sandals, a hat and a cute backpack. Anything goes! Thats why I love these dresses so much. No need to think about what you’re wearing. Just throw the dress on and add minimal to more accessories and there you have it, your comfortable and stylish summer outfit. Jumpsuits are equally as awesome. Since you’re still going with the one-pieced theme, same rules apply, anything goes! I immediately fell in love with the patterned one I purchased from Anthropologie. It instantly caught my eye and I knew I had to splurge on this starry babe. If you’re going on a vacation and want to bring minimal luggage, these are definitely the way to go!

SF Pride

After the horrible tragedy in Orlando some friends were nervous to partake in Pride festivities this year. But then said “fuck it, the only way to build this community and make it stronger is to come together.” Pride is an important and historical San Francisco event, it has been and always will be. The gay capital of the world, this city is! And I am proud to be born here and apart of it every year! I remember my first Pride experience, my parents took me when I was about 8 years old. My parents kept saying “hey look at the dykes on bikes!” lol. It was very exciting and being the age that I was, I just loved all of the rainbows everywhere. I feel very lucky to have been raised in such an open-minded family, as well as attend an open-minded Catholic school that had openly gay teachers. This goes with the (SF) territory I guess, haha. This year my girlfriend and I only participated in Pink Saturday at Dolores. Met up with the usual suspects at the park and then went to bed early to catch up on sleep since we were both jet lagged. And we’re pretty much both grandmas in general.

Happy Pride!

BottleRock Napa

What a whirlwind of 24 hours. Cruised up to the Napa Valley for the Bottlerock festival Saturday night and boy, was it hot up there. Got to the hotel, dropped off my luggage and shuttled over to the fest. My first stop was the main stage to see Florence. She was wearing a lime green flowy dress straight out of  a fairy tale and her hair was as copper as could be. She looked stunning. Even though I’m not the biggest Florence and the Machine fan I still enjoyed what I saw and appreciated her awesome stage presence and performance. Her voice was great too considering she was running all over the stage. That night eight of us managed to fit into one little hotel room, pretty comfortable you can imagine. Ahh the beauty of being young, broke and not giving a shit whether you sleep on a hotel floor or not.

Sunday morning rolled around and we were off for day 2. From a distance, I kept hearing the favorite cliche 90s songs being covered. Then the covered songs kept getting progressively better, Janes, Sabbath, Zeppelin, and some metal. The Helmets absolutely stole day 3 of the festival. The Bottlerock crowd was in total awe of these 11 year old kiddos. The long haired baby shredders were pretty insane. I truly enjoyed listening to the heavy rock essence that was going on. Naturally, Robert Trujillo’s son was the bassist and was repping a Meshuggah t-shirt. Rad! At the end of their set I must admit I was pretty bummed that the rest of my day wasn’t going to be filled with metal but it was okay because next up was WATERS! Sara and the rest of the band looking babely as ever got onstage and killed their set. Such amazing energy and the crowd was loving every minute of it. It was a blast to be on the side stage during their performance too. Misterwives were up next. WATERS toured with them last year so they brought them onstage at the end of their set. The rest of our day consisted of frolicking around the festival enjoying our not-so-minded all access perks. Open bar, amazing food (the wood oven pizza was my fave), kombucha on tap?! Two kinds. Seriouslyyy are you kidding? A girl could get used to this.

Now, lets chat about the festival fashion for a second. While the crowd was draped in the usual flower crowns, cutoffs and fringe, the artists were grunged and vintaged out. My girl, Sara Sonic was wearing a 60s vintage flowered romper with matching cape! There was quite the unique array of Doc Martens walking around backstage as well as dad snapbacks, and vintage pins and patches on jackets. Loads of neon and bright colors. I was obsessed with Mandy’s neon pom pom shorts she was wearing. New Beat Fund was straight out of the 90s, it was a trip! Dreads, giant Kurt Cobain glasses, striped and plaid blazers. The ensembles were on point, to say the least.

Monte Rio, California

Russian River bound we were, driving up through the vineyards to a cabin in the redwoods. This haunted forest oasis is called the River Queen. My brother from another mother’s dad owns this heavenly home on the Russian River. This place has just about all you could ever want, fully equipped with a monstrous game room with a shuffleboard table acquired from The Price is Right (no joke..hilarious), a hot tub overlooking the river, a hammock, kayaks and the list goes on. He also has a vintage radio collection, which I love and can appreciate because my dad used to collect them as well. Monte Rio and Guerneville is a land of hippies. Many people from SF have migrated up there for a more mellow pace of living. So when I’m headed up there for a weekend and forget to shave my armpits, I’m not too worried about it. Saturday night we had a big fam dinner with about 20 friends and then the shuffleboard competitions began! Cocktails, guitar jams, night swims and s’mores. Lazy Sunday rolled around and as we laid in the grass and listened to some Beatles tunes. After the grassy cat nap, Harlan and I decided to have a little adventure of our own and canoe up the river. A perfect intro to summer since it was 80 degrees and swimsuit weather. I was excited I got to break into my new Urban Outfitters high waisted flower power swim bottoms. In terms of apparel, anything goes when up at the river. Lounged in my swimsuit with a draped kimono over me the rest of our lazy Sunday. Already ready for the next trip up to visit the ultimate water goddess, The River Queen.
