Happy New Year!

Well we made it through another year. Hello 2016! Wow, it seems like only yesterday it was 1999 and everyone was having that Y2K freakout over the world ending. Sixteen years later and here I’ve landed in Bear Valley for my New Years weekend. My second year in a row to opt out of the party festivities in the city and hang out with my grandma, lol. Slightly bummed I missed the Flying Lotus  show at 1015 but I’ve seen him spin many, many times before. He’s amazing live and I highly recommend his body groovin beats.

I was hoping to get snow up there this year and it happened! My holiday mountain wish had come true. Hilariously enough there was so much snow that we had to shovel the driveway at 9’oclock at night to get the car in the driveway. Powder, powder, powder! The house and trees were covered with snow, naturally we didn’t hesitate to make a snowman. Harlan and I had booked a trip to go to Germany over the holidays but ended up canceling it, unfortunately. So of course, I was ready to eat all the german cuisine I could all weekend. One thing my Grandmother makes is Kraut Bierocks. Bierocks are German pocket rolls filled with cabbage and meat that melt in your mouth. Sometimes I like to add a little sauerkraut on top too. Those, plus a couple glasses of NYE champagne AND going to bed early…count me in!

Happy New Years 2016!

Mangia!

Christmas time is here

This year I really got into the holiday spirit. The past couple of years the weather was so miserable. Miserable meaning way too much sun and 75 degrees out, no thank you! I love and appreciate the seasons, and always want cold stormy weather during winter. This month we finally had just that! From Thanksgiving on, the Christmas music was on full blast everyday (no exaggeration). I’m definitely one of those people that doesn’t stop listening to xmas music the whole month. When it comes to holiday tunes, Vince Guaraldi has my heart. I’ve been collecting vinyl for almost ten years now and last year decided I needed to start the vintage holiday portion. Bing, Louis, Nat, Prima, just to name a few crucial classics.

Christmas Eve morning we started our journey to Marin. The drive was perfection as we drove across the bridge and through the rainbow tunnel to my hippie mother in law’s in Fairfax. We made homemade gingerbread cookies while watching the rain fall outside. It was the xmas eve I had been hoping for.

Merry, Merry Christmas!

Viva México!

What a fun long weekend. Flew down with my latin work boyfriend and had a nice little gaycation in Cabo San Lucas. The whole weekend everyone kept calling him my husband and me his wife. We got kick out of it because first of all we don’t look like we’d be a couple in general and secondly, neither of us are even close to being heterosexual (hence-GAYcation). We rented a gorgeous house not too far from the downtown area. Note to self: rent a car next time. The taxi situation is quite ridiculous price-wise, actually more than SF! Food was unbelievable. We were recommended to check out an amazing traditional Mexican restaurant for brunch called Maria Corona. We were placed at a beautifully decorated patio table and were brought inside to where they had a buffet style brunch. They had everything; menudo, chilaquiles, mole, chile relleno, homemade tamales, and even a ceviche bar. My new favorite dish is birria, a slow cooked braised beef dish. Rick and I were in heaven. He said it was very authentic and reminded him of his family dinners growing up. With our bellies full, we walked on over to grab a boat to take to The Arch (thankfully I’m not one to get sea sick). The rock formations were fabulous to see and the water was crystal clear blue. We saw colorful nemos and yellow tailed fish that swam right up to our boat. I’m a water baby so I was a happy girl floatin along The Pacific and Sea of Cortez.

A Bluegrass Weekend

I can’t believe this weekend came and went so fast. My fave weekend of the year! This was my first Hardly Strictly that I was able to mark out my work schedule and go all three days from start to finish. With my close friend Matt as my copilot, we accomplished those three days beautifully. Started our days off with a tasty Lucca Deli sandwhich and off to the park we went. Friday we posted mainly at the Rooster stage where we saw Laura Marling, M. Ward and Conor Oberst. All great artists. At the end of the day, the good vibes kept goin. We headed across Fulton where some friends had a gumbo and bluegrass party with a live band. Saturday we saw The Sheepdogs, The Brothers Comatose, a little Leftover Salmon, and Flogging Molly. And last but not least, Sunday we saw Fantastic Negrito, Nick Lowe, Charles Bradley, Asleep at the Wheel, Indigo Girls, and Emmylou Harris. The best performance of the weekend was by far The Sheepdogs. They were just plain, good ole rock n roll. The jamming they had going on was too groovy! Indigo Girls are always great to see too. Not to mention the fantastic sea of lesbians at that! Birkenstock and sock galore. This year was so nice, way less crowded than it has been the past couple of years. It seemed like they mellowed out on the big named artists to chill out the festival. Great idea, in my opinion! Everything was way more enjoyable that way. Happy and in my element. Sublime.

Goodbye Summer

My sis and I took a mini vaca to visit our Grandma up in the mountains this past weekend. This was pretty much the last hurrah for Summer and sending my sister off to Spain! She’s moving there to teach English for a year. We cruised up the hill to Lake Alpine and to my surprise there was actually some water still left in it. It’s been heartbreaking seeing low and sometimes non existent rivers and lakes this Summer because of the awful California drought. I’m doing my rain dances in hopes of Fall and Winter showers! The Lake was so quiet and peaceful. We only saw a couple of people the whole time we were there. I zenned out on a rock for a little bit taking in all of natures calming sounds around me. Pure bliss.
