Stop and Smell the Flowers

Have you recently taken a day to chill out from the rest of the week’s reality? Well if not, I’d highly recommend. Sometimes we forget to do so, especially in the fast pace environment that comes along with living in a city. I know I’m guilty of this. A couple weeks ago my girlfriend and I spent a Sunday in Golden Gate Park. We used to live on 48th and Lincoln Blvd in the Sunset district, three houses down from GG Park and one block away from Ocean Beach. Since we live in Cow Hollow now we spend a lot less time in that good ole golden park, unfortunately. Both my GF and I like to immerse ourselves as much as we can in the art community. Harlan is studying in a graphic design program so she nerds out with design more often than not. Bussed our way to the outer sunset to check out SF’s Zine Fest. Zine Fest? What’s that? Zine Fest is not a magaZINE festival, as one might think. It’s an exhibition for artists to come together to celebrate and connect with the public as well as local designers, visual artists, writers, and comic creators. This fest was overloaded with coolness. Everyone was so hip and oozing with creativity. I must admit, I was a little overwhelmed but also so inspired. Worth seeing- Check them out Here!

Afterwards we ended up at the Conservatory of Flowers, as much as this Sunset girl loves her fog, I do enjoy sunny days sometimes. This day was close to perfect, a little on the hot side but thats because if it hits 72 degrees for a native, it’s too hot out. It was like 85 that day, Ha! Found myself laying in a shaded part of the grass and totally living peacefully in the moment. There was a man playing some jazz tunes on his saxophone which made the experience that much more enjoyable. I thought to myself, wow, I should take a chill pill and lay in the grass more often.

Indian Summer Sonoma Style

It’s a very rare occasion when I’m not wearing a one piece or high waisted swimsuit bottoms. I love these fun cutout bottoms I bought from ASOS last summer. Target used to be my go-to swimwear spot but ASOS is now in the lead for #1 on my list. For the most part, the pieces are sold separately which I like, it gives more room to be creative and original while you’re lounging at the pool or on the beach. The fab swim top I’m wearing I purchased last summer at the Zara in Florence. Very psychedelic rainforest in my opinion.

Something I’m very excited about is that I finally switched from the old sunscreen I was using to Sun Bum! It’s so hard to find products that don’t have all of those harmful and yucky chemicals in them. “All of those” meaning basically most of the ingredients that are impossible to pronounce on the back of beauty products. According to the article Chemicals in Cosmetics many of these product ingredients are also used to clean industrial equipment, believe it or not! It’s awful that companies can sell us products that harm our bodies. Thats why it’s important to do a little research before buying cosmetic products. Knowledge is power!

A Sunday in Sonoma

Yet again, another perfect Sunday spent in Sonoma. Our first stop was The Girl and the Fig in the Sonoma Town Square. I’ve only been there once before for dinner so it was nice to check out what was on their lunch menu. Started off with the watermelon margarita. I’m not the biggest fan on fruit (i know, everyone thinks I’m out of my mind for that one) but I stepped out of my comfort zone (lol) and dove in. A-MA-ZING! So refreshing on a hot day. We ordered the moules frites, of course. My cousin, Jenna and I can never pass up sharing those if they’re on the menu. For our main course, I had the burger on a dutch crunch brioche bun with brie cheese and Jenna chowed down on a summer gnocchi pasta with pesto and corn. Both were delicious. I would absolutely recommend dinner or lunch here if you’re ever in the area. Make sure to make a res, they do get quite busy!

Cline Cellars Winery

Don’t mind my embarrassing sunburnt knees. I’m normally the mother bear when it comes to reminding everyone to wear their sunscreen. Looks like someone didn’t practice what they preached. The one and only time I don’t, I get a gnarly burn. Serves me right! What a scorching hot day this was in Sonoma. Cline Winery is the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic. I love how the property is set up. The tasting rooms are set up inside a big house as well as outside tables. There are little pathways throughout the estate that lead to hidden table and chairs for a picnic. We brought a basket filled with goodies, purchased a big glass of rosé and voilà, the perfect picnic date with my lady.

Farmers Market

Fort Mason has a lovely Farmers Market every Sunday and we try to go as often as possible. My girlfriend and I try to maintain a very healthy lifestyle. Lots of veggies and fresh ingredients if we can help it. “Organic” has been a popular thing for the past few years but it’s actually crucial. Take a piece of fruit for example. If it’s sprayed with pesticides it doesn’t grow to it’s full potential of nutrients (basically stunting it’s growth). Whereas organic foods thrive when grown naturally. A lot of companies have been using organic or natural branding as a marketing tool to be able to charge more in hopes that more people will buy their product. But this branding tactic is not always truthful, so it’s important to know where your food is coming from. Support your local farmers! When I got there, I forgot (of course) what I had originally came for and went to town on everything I saw. Naturally, I was lured in by all of the gorgeous rainbow veggies around me so we came home with quite the assortment of goodies. Dinner was delicious to say the least. Heirloom tomato with fresh basil salad and garlic olive bread to start off the feast! And certainly a glass of wine.
